Educational Scholarship Funds

First Congregational Church is blessed with four scholarship funds for members of our congregation who are pursuing higher education.  Active membership in First Congregational Church is a common requirement.  Some funds may be used by anyone regardless of age, gender, sexual orientation, or type of education being pursued.  One has an age limit, one limits the total number of grants to any one individual, and one is restricted to seminary education.

In short, there are funds available for most any kind of additional education thanks to the forethought and generosity of past and present members of this congregation. Scholarships are available to any eligible First Congregational Church member. Depending on the scholarship, grants are available for high school seniors, continuing education students, and any adult pursuing additional education and training from colleges or technical colleges.

Applications are reviewed and awards are made by the Scholarship Committee of the church.

How to Apply:

Secure an application by contacting Carrie Kolanda in the church office or by opening and printing the online application packet. Submit a completed application, along with a copy of the applicant's most recent grade transcript and a recent photo to the church office. Please contact Carrie Kolanda in the church office (608) 753-8716 or firstcon@tds.net with your questions.

The deadline for 2011 scholarship applications will be posted here when known. Please check back.

2010 Scholarship Funds Awarded

In 2010 a total of $32,500 in scholarship funds were awarded.

Ten members continuing their post high school education received a total of $28,500.

Three UCC seminaries each received $1,000 in scholarship funds:

  • United Theological Seminary of the Twin Cities
  • Chicago Theological Seminary
  • Eden Theological Seminary

Two UCC colleges each received $500 in scholarship funds:

  • Lakeland College
  • Northland College

Below is a brief summary of our scholarship funds:

BIDWELL FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIPS The eligibility requirement for a scholarship is that the applicant must be a member of this congregation.  Beyond membership, having a demonstrative history of active participation in the life of this church and having achieved high scholastic marks in high school are subsequent criteria.  A recipient may receive a total of two awards from this scholarship fund, and must be under the age of 27.
SAENGER, FRICK, McBLAIR, LEE SCHOLARSHIPS First Congregational Church membership, financial need, application quality and educational goals are some of the criteria for consideration and awards.
GRISWOLD SCHOLARSHIP FUND This fund is designated for support of students seeking theological seminary education.
GENERAL SCHOLARSHIP FUND The applicant must be a member of this congregation to be eligible for a scholarship.  There are no restrictions to age, frequency of grants, or education sought.  This is our most open and flexible fund.

Educational attainment is highly valued by the members of First Congregational Church.  The generous gifts of members of our congregation which have established our scholarship funds assure that members desirous of obtaining an education will not be prevented from achieving their educational goals because of inadequate personal resources.

Youth in our congregation have a high rate of attainment of post-secondary educational goals.  Pursuit of their goals is encouraged and supported.

First Congregational Church is especially blessed by having several members who have chosen to pursue a seminary education.
